Fraunhofer participates at SET EXPO Brazil and shows the technology that will be in all next generation Brazilian TVs

Imagine yourself watching your favorite sport, being not only able to choose which commentator you would like to hear during the game, but also to select from several other customization options. These features and other technological innovations were presented at SET EXPO Brazil in 2023 by experts from Fraunhofer IIS and other institutes who came directly from Germany for the event.

The next generation of digital TV in Brazil

Next generation digital TV is already a reality in Brazil and Fraunhofer is part of the change to this new system. The Brazilian Digital Terrestrial TV System Forum (SBTVD Forum) is responsible for choosing the components of the new TV and the MPEG-H Audio system, a technology mainly developed by Fraunhofer IIS, was selected as it provides best-in-class immersive audio as well as various customization options. Visitors to SET EXPO were able to learn about this cutting-edge technology developed by the institute that created the format mp3. At the booth, it was possible to have a complete immersive experience with MPEG-H Audio and to try out customization options by switching between different narrators such as Cléber Machado and Galvão Bueno.

In a listening room set up for the show, visitors had had the opportunity to test the audio system on a Sennheiser soundbar that creates an immersive experience by utilizing the sound reflection of the walls to create a home theater feeling without having to use a complex speaker setup including speakers at ceiling level. To hear more about the technologies at the Fraunhofer booth check out the video below.

Technology for people with disabilities

The Fraunhofer IIS technology makes it possible to experience immersive sound on headphones and adapt in which with a headset it was possible to listen to audio made especially for this disable people, where the audience and the disabled people could sit together in the room and could listen the original sound. It was an exciting experience, which makes sound quality possible for everyone.

More than one Fraunhofer institute at the fair and presence at the SBTVD Forum

At the same booth, it was possible to see a second technology developed with a Fraunhofer Institute. Fraunhofer HHI, inventor of HD system, contributed to the VVC video standard which will deliver brilliant images in the new TV 3.0 system. An industry partner of Fraunhofer IIS demonstrated the differences between current image quality and with the new technology, bringing a much more real and pixel-rich image.

Another outstanding booth was the one of the SBTVD Forum, where the all components of Brazil’ new digital TV standard that have already been decided on were presented. This overall view promised that the way we watch TV will be revolutionized by the new technologies including MPEG-H Audio. Viewers will soon have more options to customize content to their needs and taste as well as benefiting from the codec’s integration into streaming platforms and broadcast TV. This booth highlighted the customization options of the MPEG-H Audio system, thus showing the importance of this technology for the new TV era.

Currently, the MPEG-H Audio system has been adopted by Rede Amazônica, TV Cultura, and Globo, who recently tested all its features during the Soccer World Cup. With a planned start of the technology rollout in 2025, it is likely that very soon, several broadcasters will take up the innovative technology from Fraunhofer IIS for Brazil.

Do you want to know more about MPEG-H Audio?

The MPEG-H Audio system delivers high-quality sound that allows the viewer to customize the sound of a TV program, for example by switching between different languages, adjusting the volume of a sports narrator, enhancing the dialogue or choosing between various audio description options. In terms of content delivery and playback, universal delivery ensures that the sound is optimized for their MPEG-H Audio capable device and the actual listening environment.

High-quality audio is delivered to all households in Brazil! Fraunhofer IIS and Globo first tested MPEG-H Audio in Brazil during the 2019 Rio de Janeiro Carnival. Most recently, it was trialed during the football world cup, and will soon be on all TVs in Brazil.
