Workshop -“New Business Opportunities in Bioeconomy

Bioeconomy, or sustainable economy, appears in the context of the innovations based on the biological sciences, as a unique pathway for promoting the development of sustainable products, processes and services. It covers the sustainable production and conversion of biological resources into food, fiber, animal feed, chemicals, materials and bioenergy through efficient and innovative technologies. Due to the increase and aging of the world population and the scarcity of natural resources, there will be a constant need to expand the supply of food, health, energy and drinking water, which can only be achieved with a new economic model, not only based on economic gains but also on environmental and social. In Brazil, this model still walks very slowly, although the country has a gigantic potential.

In order to discuss and train young entrepreneurs for the opportunities in Bioeconomy, Fraunhofer IVV and Agropolo Campinas-Brasil, with support of the São Research Foundation (FAPESP) and the German Centre for Research and Innovation - São Paulo (DWIH-SP) and partnership with other institutions, will promote the Workshop "New Business Opportunity in Bioeconomy: How to Start a Profitable Business"The workshop to be held on November 6-7, from 08:30 to 18:00, at ITAL (Food Technology Institute).

One of the important themes to be addressed at the event is related to innovation and entrepreneurship, fundamental pillars for the economic development of a country. In Brazil, entrepreneurship presents numbers of worldwide relevance, but still lacks expressive advances to reap all the benefits that new companies can offer. In order to improve this scenario, it is crucial to create a favorable environment for innovation, so that companies act in a more strategic and integrated way in line with market opportunities, developing and using state-of-the-art technologies, taking advantage of resources in a sustainable way.

The event aims to bring together young people interested in undertaking, professionals, companies and institutions engaged in technological-based entrepreneurship in order to present and discuss different business models, innovation management and success cases and to foment the formation of relationship networks to encourage them. The event marks the beginning of the strategic actions in Public Policies of Agropolo Campinas-Brazil, within the scope of the PPPBio Project FAPESP (2016 / 50198-0), which will be developed between 2018 and 2020.

Since 2013, the Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply of the State of São Paulo (SAASP), through the Institute of Food Technology (ITAL), has signed a technical and scientific cooperation agreement with Germany through the Fraunhofer IVV Institute, which has a local representation for the coordination of projects and activities in Brazil.

In 2016, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Agropolo Campinas-Brazil and Fraunhofer IVV to initiate mutual cooperation for the development of Bioeconomy, with collaborative actions in the areas of research, education, training and innovation. This technical-scientific cooperation between Brazil and Germany aims to join efforts to intensify projects in partnership between countries and the development of a world-class ecosystem in Bioeconomics in the city of Campinas.
